Ethnic & independent retailers

Capital for the markets that serve your community.

Independent grocers and specialty shops often take more cash than card and buy inventory in bulk. Here is how funders read your bank statements — with help in your language.

Who this guide is for: Ethnic and independent grocers, international markets, halal and specialty food stores, bakeries, and import or gift shops.

How funders see a cash-heavy store

Because many sales are in cash, the bank statement is the main record funders rely on. What you deposit — and how consistently — matters most.

Cash-heavy vs. card sales
A holdback on card sales captures only part of revenue, so many stores use fixed remittance based on total deposits instead.
Bank-statement underwriting
Funders typically review several months of business bank statements. Depositing cash sales regularly gives a clearer, more complete picture.
Inventory buying
Bulk purchases from importers and distributors, holiday stock-ups and seasonal products often drive funding needs.
Multilingual support
Contracts and terms should be clear to the owner. tsmartcash can help explain options in several languages before you sign.

What funders look at

Deposit consistency
Whether cash is deposited on a regular schedule rather than irregularly.
Card processing share
How much revenue settles through card processing, which affects the remittance structure.
Supplier and inventory cycle
Purchasing patterns that explain larger outgoing payments.

Frequently asked questions

Most of my sales are cash. Can I still qualify?

Possibly. Funders generally rely on bank statements, so cash sales that are deposited regularly into your business account can be reviewed. Revenue that never reaches the account cannot be counted.

Why would a funder use fixed remittance instead of a card holdback?

If most sales are cash, a holdback on card batches would collect too slowly. A fixed daily or weekly debit based on total deposits is more common for cash-heavy stores.

Can I use the funds to buy inventory from overseas suppliers?

Funds are generally unrestricted. Plan for shipping and customs timing so remittances start after inventory begins selling, not before it arrives.

Can someone explain the contract in my language?

Yes. We can walk through the terms with you in several languages. The contract itself is usually in English, so make sure you understand every section before signing.

I have an ITIN, not an SSN. Is that a problem?

Funding options exist for eligible ITIN holders and foreign-national business owners. Requirements vary by funder and product.
