Restaurants
Funding that moves with your card sales.
Restaurants run on daily card batches, thin margins and busy weekends. Learn how holdback remittance works, how to check existing obligations, and what funders review.
Who this guide is for: Full-service and quick-service restaurants, cafes, bakeries, food trucks and caterers with US card processing and a business bank account.
What makes restaurant cash flow unique
Most revenue settles daily through card processing, which is why many restaurant MCAs use a revenue-based holdback taken directly from card batches.
- Card processing revenue
- Daily batches make it easy to see sales history. Processor statements are often reviewed alongside bank statements.
- Daily sales variation
- A Saturday can bring in several times more than a Tuesday. A holdback adjusts automatically; a fixed daily debit does not.
- Seasonality
- Patios, holidays, tourism and school calendars shift volume. Twelve months of data shows funders the full cycle.
- Existing MCA obligations
- Many restaurants already have an advance. Funders will review it carefully, and a second position can strain margins quickly.
Common uses
- Kitchen equipment repair or replacement
- Renovation, remodeling or a patio build-out
- Inventory and supplies ahead of a busy season
- Opening a second location
- Payroll during a slow month
- Health inspection or code-compliance upgrades
What funders look at
- Card processing volume
- Monthly card sales from processor statements — usually the core of the review.
- Bank deposits
- Total monthly deposits, including any cash and delivery-platform payouts.
- Existing advances
- Any current MCA positions, remaining balances and daily debits.
- Lease and location
- Lease term remaining and how long you have operated at the address.
- Negative days and NSFs
- How often the account dips below zero or has returned items.

Before adding a second advance
| What to check | Why it matters | |
|---|---|---|
| Combined daily debits | Add every current debit to the proposed new one | Total debits must fit inside slow-day sales, not average days |
| Contract restrictions | Read the existing agreement for additional-financing clauses | Stacking may breach your current contract |
| Remaining balance | Ask each funder for a written payoff amount | Consolidation may be cheaper than stacking |
| Food and labor costs | Compare debits with prime cost | Thin margins leave little room for extra remittance |

Frequently asked questions
How does a holdback work for restaurants?
A set percentage of each card batch goes to the funder until the purchased amount is collected. Busy days remit more and slow days remit less, while the total stays the same.
I already have an MCA. Can I get another?
Some funders consider second positions, but many contracts restrict them and the combined debits can overwhelm a restaurant. Compare a consolidation or payoff option before stacking.
Do delivery-app payouts count as revenue?
Payouts deposited to your business account usually show up in your bank statements, which funders review. How each funder treats them varies.
Can I use an MCA for a renovation?
Yes, funds are generally unrestricted. For a large remodel, compare the cost with equipment financing or longer-term options, and plan for reduced sales during construction.
I own a restaurant with an ITIN. Can I apply?
Funding options exist for eligible ITIN holders and foreign-national business owners. Requirements vary by funder and product.
